Oh, what a relief! After the trauma of Chelsea and Sunderland away, City picked up their first away win in the league since October tonight with a 2-3 victory over West Brom.
City were up for this from the start and determined to pick up just their second away win on the road in the Premier League this season. The players pressed energetically and moved the ball around well.
There were worrying signs early on with City squandering chances, similar to in other away games this season that we should have won.
But fantastic work from Dzeko, who had an excellent first half, and Zabaleta led to Aguero smashing the ball into the roof of the net. This was Zabaleta’s 4th assist of the season and Aguero’s 11th league goal of the season.
A second goal didn’t take long to arrive with Kolarov sending in a beauty of a cross along the ground to Yaya Toure, the BBC African Footballer of the Year finishing it coolly.
West Brom improved in the second half, but when Yacob brought Kolarov down in the box and Yaya bagged his second from the penalty spot, City were cruising. Yaya now has 7 goals this season, an excellent return from the imperious midfielder.
But it wouldn’t be a City away day without some frayed nerves. The Blues were sloppy in the second half and West Brom capitalised when the ball bizarrely bounced in off Pantilimon. Then, deep into stoppage time, Demichelis was embarrassed by Anichebe, who just barged him out of the way and scored.
Luckily, West Brom had no time to push for a third or there may have been more calamity. City picked up a much needed 3 points, a crucial 3 points with Arsenal and Chelsea winning. West Brom can be slightly relieved that rivals for the Europa League spot, Manchester United, were beaten by Everton at home.
Finally, on his return to action for the Blues, Vincent Kompany was excellent at the back, making some crucial tackles and interceptions. Here’s to you, Vincent Kompany…
